Overview

This stand-calorimeter is useful for generating thermal management data under isothermal conditions.

iso-BTC measures the amount of energy generated during discharge while holding the battery temperature constant, thus performing the battery management task. Typically, the battery or pack is integrated with a cycler so that different charging/discharging routines can be programmed to determine the heat load over a range.

iso-BTC provides thermal duty directly, in real-time, without any need for calibration, or offline calculation. Operation from -40 degrees to 100 degrees is possible pouch, prismatic and cylindrical batteries of virtually any size and shape can be tested, as shown in image 1.

A thermal management system holds the battery temperature constant and prevents thermal runaway.&nbsp
This requires the use of isothermal (as opposed to adiabatic or ARC) calorimetry and such calorimeter types are widely used in the chemical industry for testing commercially important heat generating reactions, before they are scaled up to large scale. In the context of batteries, the experiments could be performed with individual cells to get the basic information but ideally larger packs also need to be tested because the packing and physical arrangement is important in governing the transfer of heat.

For this reason the isothermal version of the BTC (iso-BTC) is available with a range of ''enclosures'' to enable batteries and packs of different sizes and shapes to be tested.
